Summer in Stoneybrook

I recently attended the Applied Improv Network conference at Stoney Brook University where Alan Alda celebrated 10th anniversary of their Medical Communications program. It was so inspiring to hear him speak about his passion for improvisation as it applies to medical providers especially how they integrate cognitive processes into science. I also presented during panel discussion about applying improv with medical provider programs as well as caring for family care givers. One of my favorite thoughts Alan shared at the conference is that the key to healthy relationships especially medical community is intentionally creating clear communication. He shared how basic guidelines used within a performance also serve healthy communication in all aspects of life. Make your partner look good: respect them enough to really listen first and then respond-Truly listen, only then respond. Easier said than done but we all know it's true....plus it feels really wonderful to be heard within a safe space. So I encourage you this next week to take a step into the learning zone by listening first, mindfully present and take it all in before responding. Hopefully by creating listening intentions will positively impact your communication at home and at work. Let me know how that develops within your life and how Improv To Grow can serve your and your community in the future.
