Summer in Stoneybrook

I recently attended the Applied Improv Network conference at Stony Brook University, where Alan Alda celebrated the 10th anniversary of their Medical Communications program. It was so inspiring to hear him speak about his passion for improvisation as it applies to medical providers especially how they integrate cognitive processes into science. I also presented during a panel discussion on applying improv in medical provider programs and caring for family caregivers. One of my favorite thoughts Alan shared at the conference is that the key to a healthy relationship, especially in the medical community is intentionally creating clear communication. He shared that basic guidelines used in performance also support healthy communication in all aspects of life. Make your partner look good: respect them enough to truly listen first, then respond. Only then respond. Easier said than done, but we all know it's true... plus it feels really wonderful to be heard in a safe space. So I encourage you this next week to take a step into the learning zone by listening first, mindfully present and take it all in before responding. Hopefully by creating listening intentions will positively impact your communication at home and at work. Let me know how that develops in your life and how Improv To Grow can serve you and your community in the future.
