Time Out!
What do you feel when you hear the phrase TIME OUT!?! Sometimes, fear, perhaps memories of embarrassment. Bottom line, something has gone terribly wrong, usually unplanned, and then is followed by consequences to rectify the situation. So it has been with Covid-19: after the shock set in, I felt like we’d been given a global time-out. Eventually, I have embraced this whole chaotic mess as a gift of time. We are all struggling to balance work, family, kids, homeschooling, caregiving, with the backdrop of economic unknowns and a global health crisis. I think we have an opportunity to learn from and, hopefully, cultivate habits that enhance our lives.
By revisiting the practice of 5X5, I take a positive spin on a time-out, be mindful to maintain my own balance so I can truly be present, doing my best, even if it is not perfect. It helps me balance manageable chunks of time for productivity and rest. We've been able to complete household projects, started a new tradition of happy hours, and binged a fair share of Netflix. Along the way, I’ve released all kinds of clothes and materials that no longer serve me to be donated or repurposed. I've completely changed the way I work, shifting from in-person, experiential programming to fully virtual engagements. It has moments that are challenging but offers new, profound ways to connect with renewed impact.
I’m choosing to create habits that support me now to serve me down the road. Now that self-discipline doesn't come easy, just like working out to develop and strengthen a muscle it takes time. Whether you see this as a time-out or a gift of time, I hope to encourage you to discover ways to be present intentionally as we move through this season as gracefully as possible.
